Food Banks Canada distributes the food that Canadians donate to their network of 4750 hunger relief organizations across Canada. But this doesn’t cover everything they need. In fact, before COVID-19, all of the food banks affiliated with Food Banks Canada used their cash donations to purchase almost $30 million dollars of food from retailers and wholesalers.
Today in 2023, the pandemic and the inflationary impact on the cost of food and housing, has been devastating for millions of Canadians and the visits to food banks have significantly increased.
FOOD INSECURITY
Food Banks Canada releases an annual report with data on food insecurity, called Hunger Count. Pre-COVID-19 the statistics were alarming and today, with the impact of the pandemic and inflation, food insecurity is on the rise.
